Why does it help me to become aware of my personality

It is very likely that, without being aware of the difference between your personality and your inner Self, you identify with your personality. It is also likely that you believe that the chatter in your head is your inner Self, thus strengthening your personality even more.

If you believe that "you" is your personality (body included), then it simply implies that everything that your personality cannot control or for which it cannot come up with a reasonable solution, is a kind of personal failure. The world of personalities is based on judgments and interpretations, so there is nothing neutral. You are being scolded at? Wrong. Your body does not function too well? Wrong. You do not succeed in an assigned task? Wrong. And you can take it from me that the label "wrong" is by far the most popular one!

Now it does not take much imagination to see that a lot of your energy goes into maintaining your personality and trying to diminish the effects of all these labels "wrong" by defending, attacking, hiding, etc., so your world will not fall apart because of them, and preferably even gets an aura of safety. And when you are in a period in your life where a lot of changes are made, e.g. at work or in your relation, and your personality gets a lot of input that he has to "correct" this way, it is getting a tough job!

It can be quite a relief to find out that there is an escape: you are not your personality. There is a difference between the standard patterns of your personality and who you really are. You can learn to break the vicious circle of judging and interpreting and choose to strengthen your inner Self. You no longer have to put your energy into defending some virtual identity you thought was you. You no longer have to search outside yourself for ways and things to make you feel good. It turns out that in fact there is nothing wrong with you. This will take away a lot of pressure. And you will find it a much more natural state of Being. And as a bonus it even makes it easier to be in the here and now, because you no longer have to use the focus of your attention for all kinds of personality-activities. You want an essential breakthrough in your intentions, and the only place where that can be done is NOW.
