Do you have to have discipline for this?

Discipline is a way to limit yourself in areas that you actually are interested in or consider to be important to you, on behalf of something else. That in itself will cause tension, and is likely to be used by your personality. It also contains the seeds for failure in it, as sooner or later the stress will be too big and you will make a choice, one that is likely to be in favour of your original thoughts and way of living.

There are two mechanisms that can help you to speed up your awareness: curiosity and unpleasant experiences. Through curiosity and interest you are likely to find yourself learn more and more about the possibilities to remember your inner Self. Everything that you will read and hear about it, makes you more and more aware that there is another way than the one of your personality. Now practicing this usually is more difficult, as your personality is not likely to surrender. He does not mind allowing you to do some exercises, as you usually will do them at specific moments in time, in a more or less isolated environment, and certainly not in everyday life. That is why unpleasant experiences can be so supportive: they will help you by nature to help you to choose for your inner Self.

You do not have do do anything. You do not have to practice or to meditate, nothing. Not that it is wrong in itself to do so, but it is not necessary to remember your inner Self. What these exercises can help you do, is question the basis of your personality that you thought to be solid and secure, and that in itself can do no harm. As you will no longer be able to deny that other experiences are possible (even though this idea may cause some stress at first). But it is the awareness of the role of your personality and letting go of the energy you put in it, that will really help you to decrease its role and make mental space for your inner Self. This is a choice that you can practice in every situation, without having to do anything special or having to take some quiet time or whatever.

Now this sounds very simple, and in fact: it is. It is likely that over the years you have entertained the idea that whenever you want to accomplish something in your life, this has to take a lot of effort, especially goals that are worth while and/or complex. You may now be able to recognize the owner of this thought: your personality. "Doing" and "complex" are his department, "letting go" and "simplicity" are aspects of your inner Self.
