Ways to experience your personality

An excellent example of the way your personality works can be found in a situation where you are looking at another person's holiday pictures or video. What you see is some people move around a screen, or stand in various poses, but you cannot make an experience out of that. While the owner of these pictures has fun re-enacting the experience (or gets angry or whatever the situation made him feel) and usually enjoys remembering through these pictures. Now you have a great opportunity to see a personality at work, and experience your own powerlessness to join in the experience. It also is not "fun" for you, because your personality cannot really do anything with the information.

Some other examples: hold a bottle of wine in your hand. A quite neutral description would be: I am holding a green bottle with a white label and a red  top in my hand. Now, chances are more likely that you will have thoughts like: "a bottle of excellent wine, for that amount of money it better be good ... maybe we could open it tonight and sit by the fire ..... o yea, pretzels, do we have any? .... is there enough wood for a fire? .... California, we have been there once, long ago ..... camping is no longer my idea of a fun vacation .....

Another example: when you go to a party, you are likely to put extra effort in your appearance: hair, cloths, make-up, perfume. You will put a lot of effort in diminishing the chances that people will not like you at first glance. But the only thing your personality has accomplished is that you are now hiding behind a masque, entertaining the idea that when people like the way you look, you must be worth while (or believe that you are someone important, or have a certain social status etc.).

Your personality expresses itself through the endless voice in your head (which by the way need not be a real voice, but it is a way of speaking about the way words form in your mind). Get your agenda, put a big cross through your appointments of the next two weeks and say: I have all the time in the world. This is guaranteed to help you remember who your personality is!
