When you fear to let go

When you find your personality is only making you scared in a certain situation, then remember that you do not have to choose in favour of becoming more aware and your inner Self, that is a choice that you may very well make in favour of your personality. You simply cannot deal with it all at once, and it is not wrong in itself to repeat familiar patterns, thus choosing for "familiar", rather than "awareness". Even if you do, you will still notice that it can no longer offer you what you hoped it would, and that you rather prefer the ways of your inner Self. And you will perceive the patterns of your personality more clearly than before anyway, so there will be some progress, be it slight.

Throughout the years, you have assigned so many labels to situations, that you may expect the process in reverse to be about the same: layer after layer will come to your awareness over time to be undone.

During the process of increasing awareness you will become more aware of fear and other unpleasant feelings, but that is not new, you also had these feelings when you were not aware of this process, only then you had some ingenious ways to hide them very quickly from your awareness, or they came with a very good story to make them acceptable to you. Now you no longer use that kind of escape mechanisms, so you face them, and will notice that they do not have a power in themselves, or that you should resist or avoid them. You will also notice that you will identify less and less with the patterns of your personality as if that alone were "you". 

However, it would not contribute anything useful when you would increase the number and intensity of these feelings by forcing this process onto yourself, thus making your personality extra fearful or defensive. He will react accordingly, and that certainly will not make mental space available for remembering your inner Self. Do trust your inner Wisdom that this process will go at a pace that is good for you, even though you might want to speed it up every now and then.
