Damage to your self image
The choice in itself is as simple as can be: recognize your personality, stop investing energy in it, let go and from now on focus on your inner Self. A piece of cake, which should not take more than a second to apply. Then why does nobody do it like that, why is your personality opposing this process and does it often take years and years before you are really committed to making this
a natural habit. Out of the many reasons that are explained here on the site, one is quite profound: loss of self image.
Your personality has identified so intensely with what he created out of your life and his assumed role in it, he has so made it true in his perception, that letting go or changing has a tremendous impact on his self image. To him, that would mean that something is terribly wrong with him (which is quite real seen from the perspective of your personality). Having to admit that something should
be approached in new ways therefore means a huge attack on his self image, which is not the thing that he is looking forward to.
That is why there is a lot of resistance, all kinds of people and counselors are dragged into the process to justify (or delay) it, there is crying, grumping, defenses, hiding, problems made: all kinds of loud attempts to cover up or make more acceptable the simple truth: that it is time for your personality to let go and give in.
At the moment where you recognize that your personality can never make things really work for you, simply because of its origin (see various other columns in the category 'insight') this may become a bit easier for you. And when you find yourself in the middle of such a process and remember that you are now trying to avoid damage to your self image, this may help you to accept the process.
It may also help you to question whether all the energy you put into these diversions and opposition is worth all the unpleasantness that comes with it.
