If this is so good and pleasant, why do I not do this naturally?

You have taught yourself over the years, inspired by the people around you, that whenever you experience the world through the eyes of your personality, and are in control of it, the result is "good" and "wanted". This has automatically diminished your remembrance of your inner Self, since you focus almost all of your awareness on the input of your personality. Now when someone tells you that you might want to give up what you have taught yourself is "fun", and that there is an experience of "something else" which cannot really be described, which cannot be controlled or forced into your awareness, then it is likely to assume that you will not be enthusiastic for this.

Usually you will have your first experiences with this "other aspect" when you find yourself in intense situations which are really unpleasant, and for which your personality cannot come up with any solution. Then there comes a moment where you are ready to admit from the bottom of your heart: I do not know what to do. Then you will stop focusing your awareness through your personality alone and the vicious circle of its solutions. However, it is also possible to practice in very minor problem situations where your personality can still entertain the idea that he is in charge of the majority of your life, so it is not a real threat to his survival to go with this new idea for a while. You may also call forth experiences of your inner Self through making mental space available during e.g. relaxation exercises. There is no universal "best way", it usually turns out to be a mix..

At least, when you enter this process, you are likely to have two profound experiences: you will notice how unpleasant the situation actually is when you perceive it through the eyes of your personality. And you will experience the peaceful yet pleasant aspects when you surrender the situation to your inner Self. Part of your process of increasing awareness is likely to come from moving through a series of what your personality labels as "unpleasant experiences", where you learn to rely on the mechanism where unpleasant personality feelings disappear once you surrender a situation to your inner Self, and that this effortlessly results in the pleasant and very familiar experience of your inner Self. Be not surprised that it takes time and practice to be prepared to let go of a lifetime of familiar conditioning through your personality, and to be able to trust this process. It can be comforting to know that you cannot lose the ability to function through your inner Self, you can only choose to not use it. You will also notice, that functioning through your personality turns out to be quite a strain, while functioning through your personality is effortlessly pleasant.

When you get more experience with your inner Self, be it on big issues or small ones, you can no longer hide from your awareness that your inner Self is much more appealing to you than your personality. You will find that being your Self is an effortless experience.  And then still you will find that the hold of your lifetime focus on your experiences through the eyes of your personality is so strong that you can hardly believe that it cannot bring you really anything you like at all. That is why this is usually a process which takes time, where you slowly yet consistently become more and more convinced that what you really want, simply through experiencing and choosing, is your inner Self.
